Car Donation for Diabetes

This list of charities is all about preventing and treating diabetes, whether that means spreading awareness about the disease and its known causes, or helping people diagnosed with diabetes have better, fuller lives.

All the charities listed here have been reviewed by the charity evaluator Charity Navigator -- the star notations you see below mean 4 stars for exceptionally good charities (meaning they use funds well and have systems in place to keep them accountable) to one star charities that may not be quite as effective with their donated funds. All have 501(c)(3) status under the IRS code, so your donation to them will qualify as a tax deduction on your personal income taxes so long as you and the car itself meet IRS requirements.

Also a BBB-accredited charity Diabetes Action funds grants for studies related to diabetes at universities and medical institutions across the US. They also run "Diabetes University" which is an annual program for the public offered free of charge, a diabetes camp for youngsters with the disease, and a number of other programs both in and out of country. They have a car donation program run by V-Dac.

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute
2219 Bath St.
Santa Barbara CA 93105
805-682-7638
http://www.sansum.org/how-to-help/make-a-donation/

Founded in 1944, this research center works for the "prevention, treatment and cure of diabetes". While they do not have a dedicated vehicle donation program they do accept gift of real property, which would include cars and other vehicles. Remember that per the new 2005 IRS rules for donating a car, if a charity actually uses your car instead of just liquidating it, you will be eligible for a much larger tax deduction. So give Sansum a call and see if one of their staff might be able to make use of your vehicle. Just keep in mind, it will have to be in reasonably good running condition.

The foundation does have a full-fledged car donation program called "Drive Away Diabetes". Your car will be sold at auction, though. Few to no donated cars are actually used by the charity or the people it helps. But the proceeds of the sale will go to this good cause.
