Charity Cars, Inc. is a 501 c 3 nonprofit that was founded in 1996. They are one of the original car charity organizations, with a mission of providing free vehicle and vehicle support services to disadvantaged families. Cars that are donated are refurbished and placed with families that are willing to work. Recipients are required to get a job and keep it throughout the lien period. They are also required to purchase and maintain car insurance.
What makes this charity different is that the cars are placed into the hands of people who need them and not sold at auction. Many of the other profit companies retain over 50% of the sale of the vehicle at auction so that many of the charities only receive 10% of the proceeds. 100% of the proceeds will go to Charity Cars, Inc.
What Charity Cars Provides
Charity Cars will supply or assist in the following:
- Obtaining a License plate
- Down-payment for insurance
- Service warranty
- Case management services
Charity Cars has received high profile publicity from some of the top broadcasting stations and news magazines, but this spotlight has alerted them to how much true need is actually out there. To keep up with this response, Charity Cars has developed a National Car Donation System. This system allows them to administer car donations on their own, saving them money on outside help and process donations quicker. Thanks to this, you can go to their website and donate your vehicle online.
From there, all you have to do is make sure that your vehicle is ready to go on your designated donation day. The process is easy. The same day one of Charity Car's representatives receives your information they will then contact the towing service. The towing service then will contact you within 24-48 hours to schedule a time for pick up.
The title and keys will be picked up when the towing company comes to pick up the vehicle. Be sure to sign over the title then cancel your registration and insurance. You must sign the back of the title in order to turn it over to the organization that you are donating the vehicle. Do not cancel your liability insurance until you've cancelled your registration. Be sure to cancel your registration so that you do not incur tickets or other violations that can be applied to your driving record.
All donations are tax deductible and you should receive a tax receipt once the car is in the organization's possession. Charity Cars picks up nationwide and another of the things that makes them unique is that can track and monitor the recipient in order to gather statistical information that measures outcomes and successes. This also helps to make improvements in the program.
Special Considerations
When the vehicle is turned over to the recipient they must agree to the following stipulations:
- The vehicle cannot be sold
- Recipient must sign a Charity Cars contract
- Cars are registered and titled to the recipient
- Charity Cars retains a lien for a period of year and the vehicle cannot be sold during this period of time.
- Recipients may be mandated to be employed within thirty days of receiving the vehicle
If you have an unused vehicle and want to see it go to good use, contact Charity Cars today via their online donation form. You'll be glad you did!
