ALABAMA
Caring Cars 256-551-1610 Caring Cars gives vehicles to people in the north central Alabama area for job transportation. Recipient families are carefully selected and referred by Family Services Center caseworkers based on need. Although many recipients are already working when they receive a car from Caring Cars, those that aren't must be working within 30 days of receiving a car and remain working for a year to keep it.

COLORADO


Cars for Colorado, a non-profit organization that refurbishes donated cars and auctions them off. The net proceeds can be donated to CFS if you designate us as the recipient. See www.carsforcolorado.org for more info.

CONNECTICUT

Good News Garage, www.goodnewsgarage.org. Operates car donation programs in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Vehicles for Change, www.vehiclesforchange.org. Provides cars to low-income people in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

FLORIDA Citrus Cars 863-683-5627 ext. 130 Citrus Cars of Polk County, Inc. was established by Polk Works in 1998 to address the transportation needs of people who are leaving welfare for work. Qualified residents can lease a good used car for as little as $26.50 a month. They are required to retain employment, and maintain automobile insurance, and after two years of successful participation they gain ownership of the car. To qualify, residents must apply at one of Polk Works' One-Stop Career Centers in Lakeland, Winter Haven or Lake Wales, meet income requirements and prove that not having reliable transportation is a barrier to getting a job.

GEORGIA Wheels to Work 404-656-7975 The State of Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority (GEFA) administers this program to makes automobiles available and affordable for those leaving welfare to seek and keep a job. Current and former welfare recipients may call GEFA and be directed to a program manager for the appropriate county. Those qualified may purchase a used car with no money down and 0% interest.

New Leaf Services 404-289-9293 This organization fixes up cars, provides maintenance and sells to individuals making welfare-to-work transitions. Eligible individuals must be enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program and be referred by case managers and placement staff.

ILLINOIS Transportation Resources of Urbana Champaign (TRUC) TRUC is a non-profit automobile dealership that sells and leases vehicles to those in need. They offer affordable monthly rates, routine maintenance clinics, and credit counseling services to the working poor. Qualified recipients are screened by the program and are selected based on need. TRUC applicants must be employed, have children, and meet income requirements to qualify. MARYLAND
Cars for Careers 410-418-5310 Cars for Careers operates in cooperation with the Howard County social services community providing cars for low-income families. Bank loans with banking partners are arranged to cover the modest cost of each car. Insurance partners help to provide insurance and a limited warranty is provided with each car. The organization accepts working vehicles as well as those usable for parts.

Vehicles for Change Vehicles for Change currently accepts applications from residents of Baltimore City and Carroll County in Maryland and throughout Northern Virginia. However, the program is quickly expanding throughout Maryland and cars may be available in other areas soon. There are particular eligibility criteria posted on the website, and individuals must be willing to take a 12-month loan to pay for the car. Car fees range from $700 to $900 per car and the monthly payment is $65 to $89 per month. Recipients are guaranteed loans without regard to credit history. Vehicles for Change does not accept applications directly -- all applications must be submitted through a sponsoring agency. MASSACHUSETTS

MINNESOTA

Getting There CAP Agency Getting There helps address a local need for reliable personal transportation by selling donated vehicles to participants at a pre-established price with the assistance of a low-interest loan. Getting There is available to families living in Scott, Carver and Dakota Counties who are in need of reliable transportation. Persons in need of a vehicle should contact the CAP Agency at 952-432-6699 if living in Dakota County or 952-496-2125 if living in Scott or Carver Counties.

Wheel Get There & Wheel Get There Too 507-345-2430 The Minnesota Valley Action Council (MVAC), a community action agency, operates a vehicle donation program in nine counties throughout the state. Wheel Get There (WGT) receives donated vehicles, reconditions them and sells them to people receiving public assistance from MFIP (MN Family Investment Program). Vehicles can be bought through a guaranteed loan, which helps recipients to build or rebuild a positive credit history at the bank. Wheel Get There Too (WGT2) provides down payment assistance (up to $1,750) and a guaranteed loan (up to $1,750) for each car. MVAC staff advises people about buying a vehicle, and also searches for suitable cars. NEW HAMPSHIRE

NEW JERSEY
Cars for Success

Cars for Success was developed to assist low income women make the transition from welfare to work by providing essential transportation. Women are referred to Cars for Success by a number of diverse non-profit organizations and agencies, which include homeless and domestic violence shelters, job training programs, and welfare agencies.


NORTH CAROLINA

Work First Employment 704-336-7600 Work First Employment Services, available to qualified Work First recipients, is specifically designed to help families obtain and retain a job by removing barriers such as child care, transportation and health problems. Work First Employment cooperates with community members to collect vehicles for refurbishing and resale to welfare recipients.
PENNSYLVANIA Wheelz 2 Work Program 215-598-3566, extension 20 Wheelz 2 Work is focused on the delivery of reliable and maintainable vehicles to low-income families. Bucks County Community College's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Bucks County Housing Group collaborate in this project and carefully screen candidates for vehicles.


TENNESSEE
First Wheels Program

First Wheels is a statewide program of the Tennessee Resource Conservation and Development Council which provides no interest, no down payment car loans for dependable used cars to eligible Families First participants when transportation is a barrier to finding or keeping a job.

VERMONT

VIRGINIA

Wheels to Work 434-295-3171 Wheels to Work provides reliable used vehicles at no cost to its clients -- most often former welfare moms who are currently working. Wheels to Work serves the city of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Nelson, Fluvanna and Louisa.

WEST VIRGINIA
Good News Mountaineer Garage, www.goodnewsmountaineergarage.com. Provides cars to people in West Virginia and surrounding states.
Good News Mountaineer Garage in Charleston, W.Va., repairs about 70% of the cars it receives, says Barbara Bayes, director of the program. Other charities accept a much smaller percentage. Good News Garage, which has branches throughout New England, repairs about 25% of donated cars, says CEO Chris Hendrickson. The typical car a Good News donee gets has about 100,000 miles on the odometer and is 10 to 12 years old.


WISCONSIN Fond du Lac Gift of Wheels 920-923-3810 The Fond du Lac Gift of Wheels Program (GOW) is a partnership of public and private agencies working together to address transportation needs of low income and disabled individuals. Donations of quality used vehicles are solicited from the general community. Once the vehicle is repaired, it is inspected by the Wisconsin State Patrol and issued a certificate of roadworthiness. Vehicles are returned to Fond du Lac and prospective purchasers are identified. Eligible participants are charged the cost of repairs plus a 20% mark up to cover program costs.

WINR Donated Wheels Program 920-236-0131 Winnebago Interfaith Needs Response (WINR) works closely with a coalition of faith based organizations and social service agencies to help low income individuals get refurbished cars or assistance for car repairs.
