These four charities are probably the best choices you have if you want your car donation to go towards helping The River City become a better place. There are national car donation processing companies, but your donation will go further if you keep it local. Besides, these charities are just as good as any of the national ones competing for your donation.
They are all 503(c)(3) certified by the IRS, so you don't have to worry about not getting an income tax deduction. They've also all been inspected by Charity Navigator, which is a charity evaluator that gives out rankings of zero to four stars (zero is worst, four is best) based on how effectively charities manage their finances, and specifically how well they keep overhead and executive salaries low in order to maximize how much they can do for their stated causes.

The American Lung Association does more than just host quit smoking programs (though that's a highly needed service that they provide very well). They also help with childhood asthma and a variety of other lung diseases, both in terms of treating people who already have the diseases, supporting research to prevent others from getting lung disease, and spreading information about how to prevent or deal with lung diseases. They are also not shy about trying to get clean air laws passed and enforced. The national American Lung Disease organization has a vehicle donation program that all local chapters have access to. This local chapter is a 3 star charity.

Help pets, and help people. This animal shelter has a great adoption program, but also works with children and teens to help them be comfortable around animals and use the animals' unconditional love so they can feel safe enough to work through their own problems. There's even a summer camp, called Camp Paw Prints. This charity accepts gifts in kind, which might include your vehicle, but only if it is in good running condition. They are a 3 star charity.
