Help make the Alamo City a better place to live by giving your car to a local charity. All the organizations listed on this page accept cars or "in kind gifts". They have also all received three or four star ratings from Charity Navigator, so you can be sure they are well-run without having to review their annual statements.
Finally, these are all 501(c)(3) certified by the IRS, so as long as your donation to these charities meets all the other requirements for a tax deduction, your donation to these non-profits will earn you a tax break.
Family Violence Prevention Services
7911 Broadway, San Antonio TX 78209
210-930-3669
http://www.fvps.org/get-involved/119-ways-to-give.html
This is the only Charity Navigator-rated 4 star charity on this page. A shelter and a family violence center that provides childcare, job training for mothers, and transportation services for victims of family violence, among many other excellent services. They do accept tangible personal property, but do not have an established car donation program. Its worth a call to them to see if they could use your vehicle (you'll get a much larger tax deduction than if your car is just liquidated at an auction sale, as most charities will do), but your car will have to be in good running condition for it to actually help them.
The following charities all have 3 star ratings from Charity Navigator
Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio
311 Probandt, San Antonio, TX 78204

This local chapter of the international Habitat for Humanity also has access to Habitat's Cars for Homes program. You can donate any car, truck, boat, RV or other vehicle to Habitat. They will come pick it up for you and handle all the tax paperwork.
Humane Society of San Antonio
4804 Fredericksburg Road, San Antonio, TX 78229

This no kill shelter has its own car donation program. Your car must have a clear title, and be in towable condition, whether it is in running condition or not. There is free towing and you can expect your car to be picked up within 2-3 days of whenever you call to set up the donation.
Operation Homefront
8930 Fourwinds Drive, Suite 340, San Antonio, Texas 78239
210-659-7756
http://www.operationhomefront.net/donate.aspx
Supports military families during times of crisis or financial stress through food assistance and providing gift certificates to grocery stores. They also provide help with car repairs, moving labor and moving expenses, vision and healthcare support and provide household items and furniture to needy military families and service personnel. Their "Wounded Warrior" program also gives wives and husbands of injured personnel a support group to work through the day-to-day challenges they face.
Operation Homefront accepts in kind donations and has an established car donation program that actually gives cars directly to the people they support. This means you will get a much larger tax deduction than you otherwise would get, but your car will probably need to be in running condition. If you do have a junk car, call Operation Homefront just to be sure they can't take it and sell it for parts. Every bit helps!
